Self love can be mistaken for self indulgence or letting go of responsibilities. Actually, it consists of taking time out of each day to take care of yourself. It could be as simple as journaling for five minutes at the end of the day to reflect on all that's happened or a planned weekend trip to disconnect from work and tasks. Ultimately, self love will result in you feeling better, being content, and having fulfilling time with friends, family, and colleagues. By creating a day around habits that require you to have some "me" time, the intention of how you live your day will evolve into something magnificent.

Being well rested and making this a priority will help you think clearly and focus throughout the day instead of needing a midday siesta. Mood, cognitive, and motor performance were negatively affected with partial sleep deprivation (<5 hours of sleep) in Pilcher & Huffcutt's 1996 sleep study.
Does it have to be a guided 30 minute meditation? No. If you are completely new to the practice, I would suggest starting out timing yourself for five minutes and build up to whatever time is adequate for you. The one rule: No Interruptions! As a small business owner, I completely understand trying to be still when your mind is wandering with all the tasks that need to be completed during the day. However, if you start your day with a simple focus, perhaps your year long vision, five year vision, a single word, Bible verse, etc. This will help ground you during the day. Annoyances will get under your skin less and you'll be able to execute decisions based on your focus much better rather than saying "yes" to everyone. Try it out right now!
Your results in your life will depend on wherever you focus your mind. Spending hours and hours indulging in Netflix? Perhaps spending a lot of your lunchtime on Facebook, scrolling through news feed? Consider adding in a couple books per month that feed your mind and help you stay on the path that you want for yourself. Only 30 minutes of reading per day can start changing the path of your life and take you to the next level.
You wake up. You grind out projects, shop, cook, clean, make phone calls, etc. At the end of the day, you have to make sure you're well adjusted. Structurally, chemically, and emotionally speaking... if you're remotely stressed (all Americans), have any traumas (includes stubbing your toe), or eat processed foods (fast food, alcohol, food that's not on the outside aisle of the grocery store), then your body will have a harder time staying in balance. If everything affects everything, then wouldn’t it be wise to look at the body as a whole instead of piece by piece? Unless you’re part cyborg, then that goes without saying. Ask any doctor in any field and they’ll tell you that without the brain working, nothing else will be functioning either. When an interference occurs, it’s the same as if the organ, muscle, or tissue were to change the radio frequency and still try to talk to the brain. Unfortunately, it won’t receive the message. Try switching radio frequencies with military operations and you can see how screwed up that situation would be.
When the stressors become too much, that’s when we see a decline in health and increase in symptoms. If you’re into alliterations, you’ll love this: Thoughts, Traumas, Toxins. Thoughts include any time you start stressing, and can we all agree as business owners that at times it can be a bit stressful? Anyone ever drive around DC, NYC, or Atlanta? It’s scary! Same goes for if everything’s not great on the home front or at work. Can you recall being in a room with someone who just sucked the life out of you? If we keep all our organs, muscles, and tissues at a healthy vibrational level, they’re more likely to stay in balance when introduced to different stressors – whether it’s people, events, or other situations. Traumas include everything big like car wrecks and hospital visits, but also small things like stubbing your toe or bumping your head. You don’t need to be a part of a bar fight to create enough of an injury pattern to where your body goes haywire. Barely bump your head and it can shut down your cranial bones. Important, why? Toxins involve all things that you consume that are ridiculously delicious. Okay, not really. You can enjoy fantastic healthy meals that don’t make you want to bang your head against the wall. Think processed foods, fast food, and anything that you can’t pronounce. The basic rule of thumb would be to stick to things you can pronounce, as well as things that granny can recognize.
So, when do these things start? Birth. You must be thinking, “Wow. They just got here. How could they need therapy already?” ‘Merica! It’s how we roll! But in all seriousness, think about the birthing process. You’re nestled in a nice, warm, and quiet cocoon until the entire thing breaks and floods out. Then you’re left to fend for yourself until finally after many hours later, you’re pulled out of the only home you’ve ever known and now you’re blinded by bright lights, hearing loud noises, and BAM! They spank you right on the bottom. Ouch! Welcome to earth.
During that process, it’s entirely possible for the first bone in the neck to get lodged to one side or the other and affect the nervous system. Now that baby must grow up with a nervous system that isn’t functioning at 100% until he/she is introduced to the bright world of chiropractic. But imagine the potential that that babe could have if all interferences were removed. Better energy, better immune system, better digestion, better focus. The list goes on.
Fast forward to teenage/young adult years, especially athletes on game day. Rotator cuff tears, hamstring issues, knees hurt with just a simple change of direction... If not due to direct trauma, I believe many could be prevented if they had proper chiropractic care throughout their life. It’s not just enough to move the bone. The muscles are what hold the bones in place. If they’re not working right, how do you expect the alignment to stick?
Anyone think that you’re too old to learn new tricks? A patient named Frank first came to me when he was running 7 miles 3x/wk. Now that we’ve worked together, he runs 10 miles 3x/wk, as well as 100 push ups and 16 pull ups each time he runs. You may be thinking that he’s a young athlete or military guy, but actually, folks, he just turned 71 years old this year.
It’s all about how you invest in your health now rather than when you have a problem. If you wait until a health crisis, you’ll spend all your resources, money, and time on trying to get it back. Your health is your biggest asset. You can’t afford to let it slide.

As we grow up, we all learn lessons. One lesson I didn't learn until later in life was how to quit. How to quit the not so perfect job, the toxic friendship, the negative relationship, or the college degree that I originally set out to obtain. Quitting seemed to be synonymous with failure. In reality, that wasn't the case at all. Personally, when I changed majors from Aeronautical Engineering to Kinesiology, it was the most freeing experience. Why? That's where my passion led me. Learning about psychology, the human body, what happens at a microscopic level when exerted to the extreme, and the list goes on. It's about doing what's congruent with you. Learn to quit.
As important as it is to develop skills of persistence and patience, it's also important to recognize when things, events, or certain people may not be ideal for your life. The world is constantly pulling us in different directions. Gathering information is important, as well as from different sources. Ultimately, it's up to you to not only make the decision - but you're also the one who has to LIVE with that decision. Something as simple as a friend saying, "Yes, you should get a new puppy," seems like a great idea. Until you get home, have to train it, buy food regularly, make arrangements and possibly pay for a dog sitter when you travel, on top of vet expenses, collars, toys, etc. In the words of Shakespeare, "To thine own self be true." Honor your inner voice.
Why do people consistently do the same things and expect different results? It's called insanity. Yet we continue with the same habits on a regular basis, such as eating sweets, skipping workouts, following a friend's poor suggestion, and hitting the snooze button. Why? Lacking vision and discipline. It is not about just saying that you want to get to point B. What little steps along the way will you take to get to that level? Work backward from your goal and give each smaller goal a date. It'll push you to work for it by a certain time so you'll be less likely to hit that snooze button. Be goal-oriented.
Richard Branson was asked to give a speech for a company for much money and only an hour of his time with a chartered flight to and from his home. The immediate response was 'no.' The company called again with a greater financial offer and shorter time to speak. Again, the answer was 'no." Finally, they called again and offered $500,000 for a shorter speech and a taxi back to the chartered flight in less than an hour. The answer was 'no." I'm sure most of you are thinking that you'd immediately take that deal. That was my initial thought. "Well, it's Richard Branson, he can afford to say no to such a request when worth billions. I couldn't pass that up." Yeah, that's why you're not Richard Branson! He has specific goals in his company. If anyone asks him something unrelated to the current goals, he replies, "What the FOCUS are you talking about?" Maintain focus.
When getting started with my chiropractic office, I wanted to win everyone over as a client. I went above and beyond to please people, going in on holidays and bending to their whims in exchange for their acceptance and approval. Very soon, I realized I was running myself ragged, as well as receiving clients who didn't truly care to get healthy and wanted a bandaid for their pain. They were sucking the energy and time away from me as fast as a teenager can devour pizza. That's when skills come in handy. Recognizing the red flags with potential clients: what they may say, mannerisms, particular questions asked, and personality type let me know very quickly whether they are truly interested in holistic healthcare. The same goes for any service or product. The biggest thing to work on is not taking it home with you. Rejection is not the same as failure. Failure is falling on your face and refusing to get back up. When someone says no, you're that much closer to a yes. Even if you get no's all day long, pat yourself on the back. Because you did it. You stepped outside of your comfort zone and got your feet wet with engaging new people, asking questions, and daring to go where others wouldn't dream. Release.
What has increased my confidence the most is continual learning. Confidence and education go hand in hand. The more knowledgeable you are on a topic, the more you can share. In my businesses, I am able to share more information than ever before after continuous seminars and reading on my own and making time to PRACTICE. What are you filling your mind with? I do what I do because I love it. What may be a job to many is fun for me. I believe in what I do and I do my best to live that lifestyle. When it's a part of you, it's tough to do anything else. Isn't it all about being congruent with yourself?
